The Museum of the Canals (Het Grachtenhuis museum)
The Museum of the Canals is located in an old typical building along the Amsterdam’s canals and in this museum you learn how the city of Amsterdam became the city as it is today.
You learn about the development of the canals, the houses and the expansion of Amsterdam.
This museum is a self-guided audio tour which takes you to 5 interactive rooms.
First room, the history of the city
In room 1 of the museum you a small part and a video screen. With projections on the scale model and wall, the very beginning of Amsterdam will be introduced to you.
Second room, the expansion of Amsterdam
In room 2 of the Museum of the Canals a projection will be displayed at the table. You will now be informed how the city was designed by architects and with what reasons the city was constructed in parts.
Third room, the construction of Amsterdam
In room 3 you scale models of the typical buildings. With a animation movie you see how they build this typical houses piece by piece.
Room 4, from history to modern Amsterdam
In this room you see a huge scale model house with different rooms. Each room represents a family living in it in a certain decennium. Each room has a number which you can enter in your audio-kit and you will hear the ambience of the room.
Room 5, Amsterdam nowadays
In this room you see a giant scale model of Amsterdam how it is today with projections on the video wall. Now you have traveled through 400 years of history!

The museum is located along one of Amsterdam’s most famous canals: de Herengracht.
